Information for Students

2011 participants

 

Student Eligibility

The competition is open to all high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. You must be enrolled in a four-year high school program as a 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th -grade student. Your school may be public, private or parochial.

 

Important notes: Contestants cannot be paid for any acting during the school year in which the competition occurs, and if you have participated in the competition in a previous year, you ARE still eligible to participate again.

Prizes

If you win the semi-final San Francisco Branch Competition, you will get an all-expense paid trip to New York City . (Click here to read about the 2009 winner's experience.) There, you'll be one of the many students from all over the United States who will deliver their monologues and sonnets at Lincoln Center before internationally recognized judges. You'll be vying for the chance to win a month-long summer acting program in Britain at the British American Drama Academy at Balliol College, Oxford : http://www.badaonline.com. Step 1: School Competition

First, your English or drama teacher at your high school decides that s/he is willing to run a competition in your school. Your job is to memorize two pieces of Shakespeare: a monologue from a play, and a complementary sonnet. You will perform and compete against your classmates to be the winner from your school; your teacher will submit the necessary paperwork

 

Step 2: Branch Competition

You will come to San Francisco and compete against the winners form other local high schools in front of a panel of distinguished judges. One winner will be selected from the Branch (semi-final) competition.

 

Step 3: National Competition

If you win the Branch Competition, you'll go on to New York City and participate in the National Competition May 2012 at Lincoln Center. If you win, you will receive a full scholarship to study at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England.

 

Date and location of the 2012 Competition

Next year's competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 2012 and will be held in the auditorium at a local Bay Area High School .
